The convoy starts to move. Ahead, the red tail lights of the snowplough; left and right only white, driven sideways across the road by the wind. No trees, no houses – in winter Magerøya is a moonscape. Then the steel globe appears in the half-light, and beyond it there is nothing: only the cliff, 307 metres down, and the Barents Sea to the horizon.

In this article: how convoy driving to the North Cape works and when it runs, how to get there without winter driving experience, what North Cape Hall offers and costs in winter, when you have aurora chances – and who is better off coming in summer.

In short: You can visit the North Cape in winter, but only with a plan. The last stretch of the E69 between the Skarsvåg junction and the North Cape plateau is driven in convoy at fixed times in winter; in storms the road closes completely. North Cape Hall is open all year, but only around midday in winter. Plan a buffer day and check road status daily with Statens vegvesen. As of October 2026.

What makes the North Cape special

  • Europe’s northernmost point reachable by car: 71°10′21″ N. The neighbouring headland Knivskjellodden reaches about 1.45 km further north but is only accessible on foot – not an option in winter.
  • A name almost 500 years old: English captain Steven Borough named the cape in 1553 while searching for the Northeast Passage.
  • Under the sea to the island: the North Cape Tunnel is 6.875 km long and descends to 212 m below sea level. Toll-free since 2012. Gradients up to 9% – drive slowly in winter.
  • North Cape Hall: visitor centre since 1988 with café, restaurant, post office, small museum and cinema.
  • Extreme contrasts: midnight sun from about 14 May to 31 July – and in winter around two months when the sun does not rise above the horizon.
  • Sámi land: Finnmark is a Sámi heartland. Reindeer graze on Magerøya in summer; in winter the herds move inland.

Sounds rough – and it is. But how do you get there?

Getting there in winter

Route Note
Fly to Honningsvåg domestic flight, small weather-dependent airport

Convoy driving: times and rules

In winter Statens vegvesen runs convoys between the Skarsvåg junction (Skarsvågkrysset) and the North Cape plateau. Start and end depend on the weather – convoys begin once snowdrifts and poor visibility occur and continue into spring.

Direction Departures
Skarsvåg junction → North Cape 08:30 · 10:00 · 12:00 · 14:30 · 19:30
North Cape → Skarsvåg junction 09:30 · 11:00 · 12:30 (Fridays only) · 13:45 · 16:15 · 21:30

Source: Statens vegvesen press release of 15 Sep 2025 – times may change. Check on the day: vegvesen.no/trafikk or the „Vegvesen trafikk“ app. As of October 2026.

  • The winter contractor can remove vehicles and drivers not equipped for Northern Norwegian winter.
  • In extreme weather the road closes completely – then you wait. A buffer day saves the trip.
  • The 19:30 convoy returning at 21:30 is your aurora chance on the plateau. Evening winter visits to North Cape Hall need advance notice according to the operator.

Light, aurora and weather by month

Month Light Aurora chance* Typical weather
Oct days shorten fast good first storms, snow possible
Nov polar night from late November good stormy, convoys often start
Dec polar night, deep blue noon good storms and drifting snow common
Jan sun returns late January good coldest wind, closures possible
Feb light returns quickly good often more stable
Mar long days until late March brighter, still winter roads
May – Jul midnight sun (14 May – 31 Jul) none peak season

*Qualitative estimate: the aurora needs darkness, clear skies and solar activity. At the North Cape the sea drives the weather and it changes quickly – clouds are the most common reason for seeing nothing. Season per visitnorway.com, midnight sun per Wikipedia „North Cape“. As of October 2026. More on planning: Best time for northern lights in Norway – month by month.

Safety: driving in Finnmark

  • Winter tyres only and experience on snow and ice. Get it confirmed with your rental company.
  • Never stop on the road to photograph the aurora – use car parks only.
  • Keep the tank above half, carry warm clothes, water and snacks. Closures can take time.
  • Wind beats cold: on the plateau the wind makes it feel much colder than the thermometer says. Protect face and hands.
  • The cliff: barriers can be buried in snow. Stay within marked areas.
  • Phone: keep it warm and carry a power bank.
